SEO Tools for Small Business: What I Use and What They Cost in 2026

SEO tools for small business websites do not need to cost much: the most useful ones are free, and paid tools only pay off once you know what you are measuring.

Key takeawaySEO tools for small business websites start with three free Google tools: Search Console, Business Profile and Analytics 4. Add Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) for site checks. Paid suites like Semrush (from $139 a month) or Ahrefs (paid plans from $29 a month) and AI visibility trackers only make sense once the basics are tracked and someone acts on the data.

SEO tools for small business owners are sold as if more dashboards meant more calls. They do not. Most service businesses I work with get further with three free Google tools used every month than with a paid suite nobody opens. This is the list I actually work from, in the order I would add each tool, with prices taken from each vendor's own pricing page on October 3, 2026.

The Short List

Prices change often. Check the vendor's page before you buy; every price above links to its source further down.

Start With the Free Google Tools

Google Search Console is the one tool I would never skip. It shows the searches that brought people to your site, which pages Google has indexed, and the errors stopping pages from showing. It is free, and it is Google's own data rather than an estimate.

Google Business Profile is free and, for a local service business, often brings more calls than the website. Its performance report shows calls, direction requests and the searches that showed your listing.

Google Analytics 4 is free. The setup matters more than the tool: track form submits and taps on your phone number as key events, or the reports will tell you about visits and nothing about leads.

Check the Site Itself

Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls your site the way a search engine does and lists broken links, missing or duplicate titles, redirect chains and pages blocked from indexing. The free version covers up to 500 URLs, which is enough for most small business sites. The paid licence is $279 per year and adds larger crawls, scheduling and more checks.

For speed, Google's free PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report inside Search Console are enough. I cover what to fix in the speed optimization guide.

When a Paid SEO Suite Is Worth It

A paid suite earns its cost when you are doing competitor and keyword research every month, tracking rankings across many pages, or building links. Before that, it mostly produces reports.

  • Ahrefs Free (previously Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) covers backlinks and site audits for sites you verify, at no cost. Paid Ahrefs plans start at $29 a month for Starter, with Lite at $129 a month.
  • Semrush's SEO plan is $139 a month on monthly billing, or $117.33 a month billed annually. Its free account allows one project and a few reports a day, which is enough to try it.
  • Keywords Everywhere shows search volume next to Google results and is sold as prepaid credit packs rather than a subscription. Credits expire after a year.

Pick one suite, not two. For keyword planning on a service business site, I explain the process in the buyer-intent keyword research guide.

Tracking AI Search Answers

AI visibility tools run fixed prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI results, then report how often your business is named. Two examples from the big suites: the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 a month per domain on annual billing (and is included in Semrush's Starter plan), and Ahrefs Brand Radar is listed from $199 a month.

For one local business, I start manually instead. Ask ChatGPT and Claude (both have free tiers; Plus and Pro are $20 a month) the questions a customer would ask, such as who to call for a specific job in your city, and note who gets named and which sources are cited. Repeat it monthly with the same questions. A paid tracker becomes worth it when you need the same check across many questions, locations or clients. What changes those answers is covered in the LLM visibility guide.

Hosting and Site Platforms

Cloudflare's Free plan covers DNS, caching and basic security for most small sites, and Cloudflare Pages hosts static sites on a free tier. Pro is $20 a month on annual billing or $25 monthly. Astro is free, open source software, and so is WordPress; with either, you pay for hosting and a domain. Which one suits you is in the Astro vs WordPress comparison.

What to Skip

  • Paying for two overlapping suites. Semrush and Ahrefs answer mostly the same questions.
  • An AI visibility subscription before you have checked the answers by hand at least once.
  • Rank trackers for keywords nobody buys from. Track the service and city searches that bring calls.
  • Plugins that promise a perfect SEO score. A green light in a plugin is not the same as a page that answers the customer's question.

If you would rather have the setup done, the SEO/AEO site audit covers Search Console, Analytics, call tracking and the crawl, and ends with a ranked list of fixes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best free SEO tools for a small business?

Google Search Console, Google Business Profile and Google Analytics 4 are free and cover search queries, Maps calls and leads. Screaming Frog's free version crawls up to 500 URLs, and Ahrefs Free covers backlinks and audits for sites you verify.

Do small businesses need Semrush or Ahrefs?

Not at the start. A paid suite pays off when someone is doing keyword and competitor research every month or building links. Until then the free Google tools and a crawler cover most of what a small service business needs. If you do buy one, pick one, not both.

How much do SEO tools cost for a small business?

A useful setup can cost nothing: the Google tools are free and Screaming Frog is free up to 500 URLs. Typical paid additions, checked in October 2026, are Screaming Frog at $279 a year, Ahrefs from $29 a month and Semrush from $139 a month on monthly billing.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?

Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI results the questions a customer would ask, such as who to hire for a specific job in your city, and record who is named and which sources are cited. Use the same questions each month so changes are comparable.
